I spend a fantastic 3 days diving off of Lundy Island with the seals. The trip was a last minute decision and i wanted to spend the time getting used to how the seals moved and what sort of issues I would face when photographing them. The most obvious from the weekend was particles in the water making the use of strobes completely impossible and still struggling to get clean photos without. The second and not so obvious issue was how close the seals like to get – at one point I had one sitting on me biting my legs!! they truely are fantastic creatures and I can’t wait to get in the water with them again in august on the Scilly Isles and in the Farnes in October.
I was lucky enough to be staying on Lundy Island itself, a beautiful place which is overseen by a small team headed up by Warden Nicola. Lundy is an incredible place for nature with it’s numerous bird population on land and over 120 different species of sea weed under the water!
I am hoping to put together a small boat of photographers for the 2011 Lundy Spash In competition, in 2010 they had £2500 worth of prizes so a great incentive if you need one to get over and take part. I’m just waiting for confirmation on some information so watch this space!

A lovely evening down at Portland on saturday, unfortuantely the cloud cover was a lot less than expected but I did manage to climb down the ledges and got a couple of shots of Pulpit Rock I’m pleased with.
I am hoping to run a couple of these Last Minute Loose end trips a month, due to their very nature of being weather dependant it will not be possible to post further than a week in advance of when these are happening so please check the news section of this site regulalry or join my mailing list, your details will not be shared with anyone else.
I took my 50D in it’s new Hugyfot Housing out under Selsey pier last night for its’ first sea dive. viz wasn’t great but at 18 degrees water temperature (I don’t think I have EVER dived that temperature in the UK before!) I did a 64 minute dive and could have spent longer if I hadn’t assured my buddies I’d be out in 30 minutes!!
A couple of pictures from last night, the compostion and subject choice may not be the most inspiring but the colours certainly are – the 50D rocks!!!
Are you at a loose end this coming Saturday? If so join me down at PORTLAND BILL http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Portland+Bill&sll=50.515518,-2.456094&sspn=0.08001,0.222645&ie=UTF8&hq=Portland+Bill&hnear=&ll=50.56056,-2.363434&spn=0.30883,0.890579&z=11 for sunset on Saturday 19th June.
Portland Bill is a great location to shoot in virtually any weather, according to the forecast at the moment it’s looking like it could be quite good with 30% cloud cover which always adds extra interest to your photos without being dull and gloomy HOWEVER I obviously cannot guarantee the weather!
I will be in the car park to meet people between 19.30 – 20.00 at which time I’ll be walking down to the location to set up ready for sunset at 21.23. I will be on hand to help with composition ideas, using filters and any sunset photo questions you may have, please be aware I will be taking photos too as this is not a dedicated workshop.
Remember to bring your tripod, filters if you have them and dress according to the weather, it can get quite chilly down at Portland.
If you are interested in joining me please email helen@seelifethroughthelens.com. I look forward to seeing you there

It seems like See Life Through The Lens has taken over the July issue of Outdoor Photography, the leading Camera Magazine for Landscape and Wildlife Photographers. Not only have they run my Workshop advert but they have also featured my Exhibition in London in July, included me in the What’s On Workshops section AND featured my website in their On The Web section! A BIG thanks to OP, let’s hope the added publicity works!!
